Moisture is Water—Not Oil!

One of the biggest curly hair myths is that oil equals moisture. Let’s be clear: Oil is not hydration. Water is.
Curly hair needs hydration first, and that comes from water and water-based products.
Think of your body when you’re thirsty. If you’re dehydrated, drinking a soda might feel refreshing for a moment, but it won’t actually quench your thirst—only water can do that. The same goes for your curls. Oils and butters might give the illusion of hydration, but they don’t actually replenish moisture. Your hair, just like your body, needs water first.
Or imagine a plant that’s wilting. Would you pour oil on it and expect it to come back to life? Of course not! You’d give it water, because water is what truly hydrates. Your curls are no different—without water and water-based products, they can’t thrive. Oils can help lock in moisture, but they can’t replace it.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I do use oils in my products, but here’s the difference:
✅ The right oils, in the right amounts, can help seal in moisture, not replace it.
✅ The first few ingredients in your product matter. If oil is one of the first 5-6 ingredients, that product is likely coating your hair instead of hydrating it.
✅ Heavy oils and butters (like coconut oil and shea butter) might sit on top of the hair instead of allowing moisture to penetrate.
Why You Need a Curl Specialist (Not Just Any Stylist!)
Seeing a curl specialist isn’t just about getting a cute cut—it’s about learning how to care for your hair the right way.
💡 I teach my clients how to properly hydrate their curls and build a regimen that works for their lifestyle (when you book CocoaLovesCurls Experience).
When you sit in my chair, here’s what you can expect:
✅ A cut that enhances your curl pattern instead of forcing it into a shape that won’t last.
✅ A hydration-first approach that keeps your curls defined and healthy—without product buildup.
✅ A stylist who actually listens and understands what your hair needs.
